I recently attended a wedding where the table favor was a book entitled "Dinner at Max & Beck's: Delicious recipes from our home to yours"

In honor of Becky & Max I present their version of:

Roasted Yellow Pepper Bisque

INGREDIENTS:

3 yellow peppers, roasted and seeded
2 medium yellow or red potatoes
1 carrot
1/2 red or yellow onion
3 stalks celery
2 garlic cloves
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups vegetable stock
fresh basil
dash of curry powder
dash of red pepper
salt and black pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Dice the peppers, potatoes, carrots, onion, celery, garlic, and basil.

2. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan and saute the vegetables for about 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring often.

3. Add the vegetable stock and simmer for another 10 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and puree in a blender until very smooth.

5. Return to the saucepan to heat through over medium heat.

6. Add curry powder, red pepper, salt and black pepper.

7. Garnish with fresh basil or red pepper for an extra kick.

Balloon Fest 2007 Balloon Fest 2007

Well, Cambridge has had another successful Balloon Festival Weekend, with streets filled with a myriad of activity, and those high flying (and sometimes, low flying)dinosaurs of the air floating over Main Street in the wee hours of the morn.

It is always a fun time, and great to see familiar and unfamiliar faces enjoying the simple riches that our area has to offer. Thanks to all those dedicated and hard working people with the vision and the energy to help make good things like this, come to life here in our little town!

Jack loves the old signs (this one he dates circa 1925) that he finds here and there as he spends his day looking out for “the most interesting thing he has ever seen in his life.” This particular sign might not be THAT thing, but it does open one up to a whole lot of speculation! Why the dawdling rotation? What are lane laws anyway? What’s with the sexy red and yellow racing stripe if you need me to restrain my speed?

Jack mostly admires the details such as the type of wood and paint job, and the fact that it has black letters on a white field, adding greatly to its simple charm. Keep Jack’s Outback in mind to visit when you make that slow roll through town this weekend to enjoy the Cambridge Valley Balloon Festival.

STANNARD’S ROSE

I always look forward to the season of flowers each year. There is just no getting enough of the scents, textures, shapes, and especially the colors, of all of the wild and cultivated blooms that splash every nook and cranny of our Valley from the beginning of Spring’s cowslips, tulips and daffodils, right through to the mums and asters of Autumn.

I found this particular bloom at Stannard’s Vegetable and Flower Market, just outside of Cambridge. Melissa and James Stannard took over the old Hayes Market and have wonderful veggies and flowers to offer the public. Last year their rose bushes were a riot of luscious colors presented to appreciative eyes. However, this particular common red rose caught my eye because of the crystal-like raindrops clinging to its velvety petals. The cool freshness and robust color were perfect to digitally turn into a painting-like shot. Gazing at this flower makes me think of a healthy, vital, intense human heart. So much so I can almost feel it’s pulse.

Unfortunately I had to miss most of the Spring awakening in our Valley due to sustaining a small injury that has kept me mostly house-bound for several weeks. I will soon be cruising the roadsides again in search of lovely blooms and can’t wait to see what I will find. Perhaps the flowers in your own garden will sing their siren’s song to me as I drive by. If so, I thank you now for sharing your love of flowers with me and all who view them; for helping to decorate our Valley with beauty.

There is a show of my photographic work at Kevin at Mikes Place III restaurant, 27 Main St, North Bennington, VT Tel: (802) 442-0122. The work goes up starting today, June 1st 2007, and will be on display for the entire month.

Treat yourself to some good honest food, at reasonable prices, and check out my new series of photographs called, "emergence: crossing over."

I made these photographs while working on a film for performance artist, Katy Schonbeck, about chaos theory and how it relates to love and loss. The cinematic nature of these individual still photographs inspired the idea to mount them in context to one another, making the structure of the wall become a giant “filmstrip.”
